How often do online prices actually change?

Measured, not estimated. Every figure below comes from dated price observations Melqart took from public storefronts over the last 30 days, grouped by category and currency. No retailer is named, currencies are never mixed, and a category is published only when enough independent storefronts stand behind it.

Method

  1. A listing is one product on one storefront. A read is one dated observation of its price and stock state, taken on the schedule of the merchant who watches it (weekly to six-hourly by plan).
  2. A change is a read whose price differs from the previous read of the same listing in the same currency. Because reads are scheduled, "changed in 30 days" means "changed between our reads" — a price that moved and moved back between reads counts once or not at all.
  3. Cuts and raises count moves, not listings; a listing that moved three times contributes three moves. The typical move is the median absolute percentage change.
  4. A read-to-read move of 40% or more is not counted as a price move. On cigar storefronts most such moves are a box price read one week and a single-stick price the next, or a variant swap; the pricing engine refuses the same magnitude as implausible. Each figure says how many moves were set aside.
  5. Out of stock is the share of listings whose latest read in the window reported no stock.
  6. Fixture and placeholder domains are excluded. A category × currency is published only with at least 3 independent storefronts and 300 listings. Currencies are reported separately and never converted.
